I am fortunate to have got another never should miss opportunity…….. to visit Kalimpong (a hill station in West Bengal) name is quite odd when somebody speaks it. It’s actually a name of that place where I want to visit again and again to become true traveler and literally fall in love with this place and its mesmerizing never ending beauty.
The nearest airport to Kalimpong is Bagdogra in Siliguri. All major domestic airlines from various Indian cities offer good connectivity between Bagdogra and rest of India. Direct flights to Bagdogra are available from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. Local taxis can be availed from outside the airport to reach Kalimpong.
Kalimpong is well connected by road with Siliguri, Gangtok, Kolkata and Darjeeling. Regular buses from Darjeeling, Gangtok and Siliguri ply to Kalimpong. One can either take a bus or travel in their own vehicle.
Kalimpong does not have its own railway station and the nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri Station. This is a very important railway station of North Bengal and direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi and New Jalpaiguri. Pre-paid taxis are available outside the station and can be availed to reach Kalimpong.
We began our journey from Indira Gandhi international airport to Bagdogra airport. From Bagdogra airport we took pre-paid taxis to Kalimpong. On our way to Siliguri we enjoyed the view of Teesta river, took blessing of Kali Ma and witnessed the coronation bridge built in the times of British India.
Light shower and my favourite food made a good combo of that moment, making my Heart filled with overwhelming joy ….somehow I controlled my feelings because I was with professionals.
We stayed in in best lodge of that place. It was 5 star lodge as per the ratings of the previous travelers. Its atmosphere of tranquility and serenity further provided authority to its claims of being the best lodge in Kalimpong. Its balcony gives you paisa vasool view of hills and clouds. The wind hugs and touches you softly on your face.
If you are visiting or planning to visit Kalimpong, take my words and stay at DEKI Lodge to feel what others have felt – pure joy. You can find it along the Rishi Road, a 10 minutes walk from taxi/bus stand.
If you are roti eater like me – hold on, as chapati of maida……not pure atta ki roti. you will get mostly rice and Tibetan and Chinese food.
It is one of the two hills (other being Deolo Hill) that are connected by a ridge on which the town Kalimpong rests. The view from here is breathtaking as it overlooks the whole town of Kalimpong and the snow clad Himalayan ranges, the Teesta river and its valley. Not very far from there is the Durpin monastery. Inside the monastery you will find prayer rooms, meditation hall and pure calmness.
There are also several nursery where you can see several kinds of plants. In particular, Kalimpong Cactus Nursery has many kind of cactus to see and buy but the price is too high. Even a small cactus will cost between 400-800. So better give your eyes a treat and comeback happily.
Fresh bite restaurant became our adda for those day. Pretty and sweet lady and his assistant will serve you with love – foods laphing, soup momo, sausage, cheese pakora, coffee and many more tibetan foods. Not able to recall the names of all.
One important information for all travelers; all shops close by 7 or 7:30. After that you have to empty streets of Kalimpong to walk along.
A monastery near Central school of Tibetans can be seen as it has lots of historical knowledge about buddhism, its holy culture and deities. And if you get a chance to have pure Tibetan butter tea with tibetan snacks don’t miss it.
I want to never stop writing about such a beautiful place, but then I cannot test your patience. I want you to visit the place for yourself and enjoy the pure beauty of Kalimpong, West Bengal.
Thanks for reading.
